As per new notifications of UGC the admissions of PhD will be done based on NTA UGC NET score from academic year 2024-25. The purpose of this decision is to simplify the admission process and offer students a unified, country-wide entrance examination as a component of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

PhD Admission will be based on UGC NET Score 2024-25 The University Grants Commission (UGC) has made a noteworthy decision to allow colleges in India to use UGC NET scores instead of their own entrance tests for admission to PhD programmes, commencing with the academic year 2024-2025.

The purpose of this decision is to simplify the admission process and offer students a unified, nationwide entrance examination as a component of the execution of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Jagadesh Kumar, stated on the social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), that starting from the academic session of 2024-2025, universities will be allowed to consider the National Eligibility Test (NET) score as a criterion for admission to PhD degrees, instead of conducting their own entrance tests. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is now in the process of preparing for the introduction of the National Eligibility Test (NET) application procedure for the June 2024 session. The launch is expected to take place sometime next week.

PhD Admission will be based on UGC NET Score 2024-25 – According to the notification issued, the UGC has noted that numerous universities administer entrance tests for admission to their PhD programs, which necessitate candidates to take multiple PhD entrance exams. To streamline the process and assist students in their PhD admissions, the UGC has established an expert committee to evaluate the provisions of NEP 2020. Based on the committee’s recommendations, the UGC has determined that NET scores can be utilised in place of entrance tests.

PhD Admission will be based on UGC NET Score – Starting in June 2024, applicants who take the NET exam will be deemed eligible in three distinct categories:

Category-1

Individuals are eligible for both admissions to a Ph.D. program with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and appointment as an Assistant Professor.

Category 2:

Individuals are qualified to be admitted to a Ph.D. program without the need for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and can also be appointed as an Assistant Professor.

Category 3:

Refers to those who are solely eligible for admission to a Ph.D. programme and not for receiving the JRF award or being appointed as an Assistant Professor.

According to UGC, the NET result will be announced in percentile, along with the candidate’s marks. These grades will be considered for admission to PhD degrees. For admission to a PhD programme, candidates who meet the criteria in Categories 2 and 3 will have their test scores weighted at 70 percent and their interview performance weighted at 30 percent. The admission will be determined by the aggregate merit of the NET scores and the marks obtained in the interview/viva voce. The scores achieved in the National Eligibility Test (NET) by candidates in the second and third categories will be valid for a period of one year for admission into a PhD programme.
