Earthquake Shakes Kharar, Mohali, and Chandigarh: Residents Recall Terrifying Experience

Kharar, Mohali, Chandigarh | October 3, 2023

A significant earthquake rattled the regions of Kharar, Mohali, and Chandigarh today at 2:54 PM, sending shockwaves through the area and leaving residents in a state of panic. The tremor, which had a magnitude of 2.8 on the Richter scale, lasted for approximately 20 seconds and was felt across a wide area.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Kharar, a town situated in the Mohali district of Punjab, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers beneath the Earth’s surface. This seismic event caught many by surprise, as the region is not typically known for experiencing significant earthquakes.

Residents in Kharar, Mohali, and Chandigarh reported feeling strong tremors that caused buildings to sway, furniture to topple, and windows to shatter. Many people rushed out of their homes and offices in fear, seeking open spaces for safety. Power outages and disrupted communication lines added to the chaos, making it challenging for authorities to coordinate their response.

“I was working in my office when the whole building started shaking violently. It felt like the ground beneath us was moving. We immediately ran out, and I saw people running in all directions,” said Rahul Sharma, a resident of Kharar.

This earthquake serves as a reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness, even in regions that are not traditionally associated with seismic activity. Experts recommend that residents take measures to secure heavy objects in their homes, create emergency plans, and assemble disaster supply kits.

The situation in Kharar, Mohali, and Chandigarh is still evolving, and authorities are working diligently to provide assistance and ensure the safety of residents. As more information becomes available, residents are urged to stay informed through official channels and follow the guidance of local authorities.
